Hail No! What To Do After The Hail Hits The Roof

by Lorraine Fisher

Asphalt roofs can last anywhere from 15 to 20 years. Why such a long time span? The number one factor in determining how long your roof will last is weather. Mother Nature is hard on roofing and wreaks havoc every single day.

How Weather Affects Your Roof

High winds seem the most obvious weather attack on a roof, but the International Building Code requires that asphalt shingles stay put in up to 110 mph winds. More of a threat is the precipitation in all its forms. Driving rain and salt spray in coastal areas can beat shingles into submission, and the crushing weight of both snow and ice can wear on your roof. Even seemingly innocuous sunny days can damage your poor roof as the sun's UV rays break down the surface of your shingles over time.

Hail, however, is the worst offender. Those little pellets of ice can reach softball size with little to no warning. Hail has been known to dent cars. Your roof doesn't stand a chance. Hail can not only damage the shingles, but also the wood underlayment.

How Much Damage Can Hail Do to a Roof?

The amount of damage that hail can do depends on the size of the hailstones as well as the building material. Slate, metal, asphalt, and cedar shake shingles all react differently to being struck by hail. Travelers Insurance even notes that larger enough hailstones can puncture your roof in extreme cases. Also, the age of your roof can affect the damage. Older roofs cannot stand up to the force of a hailstorm as well as a newer roof. Depending on the severity of the storm, you could be looking at a small repair or an entirely new roof.

What to Do After a Hail Storm

Seek shelter during the storm but, once the threat of injury has passed, examine the damage. Call the authorities if you notice any downed power lines or fallen trees that are blocking public roads. Walk around your house to look for any damage to your signing and windows. Once it is safe to do so, grab a ladder and look at your roof. Report the damage to your insurance agent as soon as possible. Take pictures for your records of both the damage to your home and your yard.

Hail happens. Having good insurance and hiring quality hail roof repair services can make all the difference as you pick up the pieces after the storm.
