Choosing A Drainage System For Your Flat Roof

by Lorraine Fisher

Flat roofs do not have the slopes that would normally be needed to allow for water to drain. As a result, water can pool on the roof in a manner that can cause damage to the roof. Fortunately, there are drainage systems that can allow for water to easily drain from the roof.

One way to drain water from a roof is to place scuppers on it. These are outlets that are placed on the edge of the roof. They provide a location from which water can drain away from the building. They are sometimes used as an alternative to interior drains because they are less expensive. Ideally, the roof should be a sloped structure that directs the water toward the scupper. However, they are not the best option for areas that experience a lot of melting snow.

Gutters are not only used for sloped roofs, but can also be used for flat roofs. The job of the gutter is to collect water on the edge of the roof and carry it away. Gutters are cost-effective because they can be attached to a roof that has already been constructed. If the existing drainage system is not effective enough, a gutter system can be attached or the existing system can be modified. They are great for parts of the world that experience a range of weather conditions because they are effective at handling both rain and snow. However, they need to be cleaned regularly in order to function properly.

Interior Drains

This consists of internal gutters that pass through the roof and carry water away. These pipes and gutters are connected to drains that have strainers placed on top of them to prevent leaves from entering. However, the strainers and occasionally the pipes and gutters need to be cleaned of debris so that they do not continue to be clogged. These are ideal for large roofs where the bulk of the water gathers in the center and will need an internal drainage system to carry the water away. Even though they are more expensive than other options, they are sometimes essential. While this type of roof is most often used for commercial buildings, those who have residential homes may use this roof if they have a large-commercial style roof.

Removing water from a flat roof is essential. Otherwise, cracks can form, the roof can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and moss and other plants can grow on the roof. Even if you do not pick the perfect drainage system, it is better than no drainage system. Contact a roofing company to learn more.
